How To Make Your Own Wax Melts
Repurpose Old Candles
This is one of the easiest ways you can make wax melts. You can do this two ways. Either use a candle warmer (like the one pictured) put the candle in a pot of water on the stove top and let it heat up until it is completely melted. Then all you need to do is poor the melted wax into empty wax melt containers, ice cube trays, or cupcake cups. Pop them in the freezer for about twenty minutes until they are hard, and then pop them out of the molds. Store them at the room temperature. Do not skip the freezer step, this makes it easy to pop them out of the molds. If you are using empty wax melt containers you can easily just pop them in the freezer, let them harden, and then store them for later use.

Soy Wax and Oils- This is the other way you can make your own wax tarts. It's a little trickier than the others and requires you to find or order some of the things. This is what you need. Soy wax which is sold by the pound. You can find it at your local Michael's craft store or you can order it cheaper by clicking here. The second thing you need is fragrance oil or essential oil. The difference between the two of them is that the fragrance oils are the ones you can buy at Yankee Candle, Walmart, Bath and Body Works, and other stores. They range between 2 dollars to 6 dollars a bottle and have a wide range in scents. Essential oils are all natural and used in most body products. You can find them by clicking here. You cannot I repeat CANNOT use fragrance oils in body products. They can cause certain body areas to burn or be extremely irritated. Since you aren't using wax tarts on your body fragrance oils are a cheaper easier way to go. You also need a thermometer to measure how hot the wax is getting. The last thing you need is a double boiler such as the one picture. Or you can simply put a small put in a bigger pot of water. The other option is just heat it on the stove top and skip the water. Either way you need to heat the wax up in something, preferably on the stove top. So measure out how much wax you need. If you are pouring it into a 8 oz container, use 1 cup of wax to every 2.5 ounces of oil. You can use more of less oil if you like, it all depends on how strong you want the scent to be. Here are the exact steps you need to take.
- 1. Measure the amount of wax you want and pour it into the heating element of your choice.
- 2. Heat the wax up to 160*F on a medium to low temperature setting, stirring constantly to avoid the wax from bubbling.
- 3. Let the wax cool to about 135*F and then pour in the amount of oil you want to use. (It is important that you wait until it reaches 135*F because if you prematurely pour the oil in, the temperature will cause it to burn the fragrance away, so you are only left with soy wax instead of scented soy wax.)
- 4. Pour wax into molds or empty wax melt containers
- 5. Pop in the freezer for about 20 minutes
- 6. Pop out of molds or simply store wax containers.
